AUG5.3

~ Tulku Thondup Rinpoche

For any spiritual training or mental activity, we need concentration. Learning how to concentrate makes our mind strong, clear, and calm. Concentration protects our inner wisdom, like a candle flame sheltered from
the wind.
For Buddhists, concentration on an object with spiritual significance will generate positive energy, blessings and virtuous karma. However, we can train our minds to concentrate by practising on virtually anything, whether it is a physical object or a mental image, regardless of whether it is spiritually meaningful.
Buddhist training to strengthen concentration involves two methods: inward and outward. The inward method is to concentrate on your own body, for example by seeing the body on a form of a deity or as a body of bones. We can also concentrate on the elements of the body such as the breath, or the body as seen in the pure form of light or joy. The outward method is to concentrate on images, Buddha 'pure lands' or other visualisations.
